The Sturgis Rally Packing Checklist Every Harley Rider Should Read

3 min read

If you're riding to Sturgis this year, you're probably thinking about the fun stuff: the Black Hills, Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, Main Street, and spending time with thousands of fellow riders.

But before the kickstands go up, it's worth spending a few minutes making sure you've packed the essentials.

At Sturgis 66, we talk with Harley riders year-round, and one thing we've learned is that the best road trips usually start with a good checklist.

This is the checklist I would use before heading to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

✓ Driver's License

Seems obvious, but every year somebody realizes theirs is sitting on the kitchen counter.

✓ Motorcycle Registration

Make sure it's current and easy to find.

✓ Proof of Insurance

Store a paper copy and a digital copy on your phone.

✓ Emergency Contact Information

Keep it in your wallet and saved on your phone.

✓ Hotel or Campground Confirmations

Download confirmations before leaving. Cell service isn't always available exactly when you need it.

✓ Credit Card and Some Cash

Most places take cards, but having a little cash can still be useful.

Check Your Harley Before the Trip

✓ Tire Condition

Inspect for:

Tread depth

Uneven wear

Cracks

Embedded objects

A five-minute inspection at home beats dealing with tire problems hundreds of miles away.

✓ Tire Pressure

Check it before departure and again on the morning you leave.

✓ Oil Level

Long trips are more enjoyable when maintenance is already handled.

✓ Lights and Signals

Verify:

✓ Headlight

✓ Brake lights

✓ Turn signals

✓ Running lights

✓ Battery Health

Put the bike on a battery tender for a few days before a long trip to make sure it's fully charged and ready to go.

What Goes in My Tour-Pak

✓ Rain Gear

I've never regretted bringing rain gear.

✓ Extra Pair of Gloves

Dry gloves can feel like luxury after riding through rain.

✓ Hoodie or Lightweight Jacket

Morning temperatures and mountain temperatures can be very different.

✓ Ear Plugs

Many experienced riders consider these essential equipment for long-distance riding.

✓ Sunglasses

Pack a backup pair. Trust me on this one.

Electronics I Never Leave Without

✓ Power Bank

Perfect backup for phones, Bluetooth systems, and other electronics.

✓ Bluetooth Helmet System

GPS directions, music, and rider communication all become easier.

✓ Phone Mount

One of the most useful accessories on any touring bike.

or

✓ Phone Mount w/ Wireless Charger

Emergency Items Worth Carrying

✓ Tire Repair Kit

Hopefully it stays untouched for the entire trip.

If not, you'll be glad you packed it.

✓ Portable Air Compressor

A tire repair kit and air compressor are a great combination.

✓ Compact Tool Kit

A compact motorcycle tool kit can handle many small adjustments on the road.

And zip ties! Surprised by how many times these came in handy!

✓ Flashlight

Useful for parking lots, campgrounds, hotels, and finding things in your Tour-Pak after dark.

✓ First Aid Kit

Small, lightweight, and worth having.

Final Thoughts

The ride to Sturgis is part of the adventure.

The better prepared you are, the more you can focus on enjoying the Black Hills, meeting fellow riders, and making memories instead of tracking down something you forgot.

A good checklist won't guarantee a perfect trip, but it can help you avoid a lot of preventable headaches.

From all of us at Sturgis 66, have a safe ride, enjoy the rally, and make the most of every mile.
